NHL Legends All Stars
March 29, 2018
The Lions NHL Legends Classic Project will hopefully raise enough money to re-establish the Red Fox Diabetic Camp on PEI this year and for years to come.
Many children's summer camps have themes ranging from sports to drama to cooking, but one in Canoe Cove is helping children to manage their health.
At Camp Red Fox, you would see children having fun playing traditional camp games, but you'll also see them checking their blood sugars.
The camp was for children with Type 1 diabetes. At Camp Red Fox, along with crafts, games and camp fires, the kids learned how to manage their disease.
Diabetes Canada announced last this in January that it will not run Camp Red Fox in P.E.I. or Camp Dia-Best in New Brunswick. The region's only camps will now be held in neighbouring Nova Scotia.
It was devastating news for those children, and their parents, who had attended Camp Red Fox for the last four years and for those who had planned to attend this year.
It is difficult for many and impossible for some children to travel hundreds of kilometres away from home, especially given the nature of their condition, which requires careful 24/7 monitoring.
Diabetes Canada has offered free transportation for children from P.E.I. and New Brunswick to the camps in Nova Scotia, but parents are not excited about that option. Being a four- or five hour-drive drive away would be too stressful for both parents and children, many believe.
Many kids, especially young children are terrified going to camp and knowing family is not far away puts kids at ease.
